Doctoral Research: The question of what is a book looms large at the centre of my research, which offers one potential answer is thinking about books as navigational instruments. Combining archival and digital book history with literary close reading, I explore how readers navigate books, and how books navigate the early modern city of London, constructing the centres of the book trade and the imaginary worlds of travel writing. With chapters on interactive ‘instrument books’, the library, the city of London, and the globe I move from micro to macro scales of reading via George Wither, Samuel Pepys, Nicholas Breton, John Taylor and Joseph Moxon.
