Doctoral Research: My thesis looks at the script change from a runic alphabet to the roman alphabet in Anglo-Saxon England, as well as the interaction between the two alphabets. I'm interested in how the roman alphabet was adapted for the use of writing three Old English front vowels and what factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic, played a part in the establishing of orthography. I look at the earliest epigraphical, numismatic and manuscript evidence up to around 850.
