Doctoral Research: My thesis looks at the script change from a runic alphabet to the roman alphabet in Anglo-Saxon England. I'm interested in how the roman alphabet was adapted for the use of writing three Old English front vowels and what factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic, played a part in the establishing of orthography. I look at the earliest epigraphical, numismatic and manuscript evidence up to around 850.
